The Examiner dialog can be used to get details about a symbol regarding categories, levels, and Part Tags assigned to it. This makes it easier to know how to manipulate visibility in Paper View or how to organize your Article Views in the Calculation.
Examine objects
To examine a symbol more closely:
- Open the Examiner tool from the Tools drop-down menu, or using the keyboard shortcut Shift + I.
- Click Examine and hover over the item in the drawing that you would like to inspect. Potential objects will highlight with an orange outline in the 2D view and will turn orange in the 3D view.
- Click to select the object. Overlapping objects will be listed and you can choose your selection from the list.
- Information about the symbol and its sub-parts will appear in the Examiner window. You will see categories, levels, and part tags that apply to the symbol.
You can examine multiple components at one time. Simply repeat the steps above and you will see all the selected components listed in the Examiner dialog. When multiple objects are being examined, only one can be expanded at a time. Clicking on one of the components listed will collapse others. You can also collapse an expanded component by clicking on the black triangle to the left of the name:
Examiner dialog buttons
On the left-hand side of the Examiner dialog you will find buttons to examine components, clear the dialog, refresh information, locate the selected component, filter the information in the dialog, and to highlight the selected component in the drawing.

|
|

|
|

|
|
Filter provides a drop-down menu where you can select the type of information to show or hide in the Examiner dialog. You can show a combination of categories, levels, Part Tags, and sub-parts of that component . If you are examining any product tag text, you can also see the tag owner, i.e. the product that the tag text belongs to. |
|
Flip the Highlight toggle on to see the component currently expanded in the Examiner dialog highlighted in blue:
Examining tag text
You can determine what object a tag text belongs to by examining it in the Examiner.
To examine tag text, go into the View All View Mode, or another View Mode that shows tag text, at the bottom of your drawing view.
Then complete the steps in the Examine objects section of this article, selecting the Item Tag that you want to examine during step 3.
Tag text is automatically categorized and adopts any Part Tagging assigned to their owner, so this information is not displayed in the Examiner. You will just see the Level and the Tag owner.
