Layers are the primary method for organizing geometric objects in a drawing/block by function or purpose. Accurately naming the layers can reduce complexity and improve display performance to increase efficiency for the end user. In addition, layers allow the user to hide information that they may not need to see at a certain moment.

In 2D layers help with plot plans and identify similar or import details in the drawing.

In 3D layers are best used to help describe and identity materials and finishes for simpler renderings.
